April 2022 Spotlight: Dr. Cherise Hamblin & Patients R Waiting
Dr. Cherise Hamblin, a board-certified OBGYN, is the founder of Patients R Waiting, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating health disparities by increasing diversity in medicine.
In January 2023, Patients R Waiting expanded, opening a physical site in Lancaster, and creating more opportunities for aspiring medical professionals. The organization also offers a 12-week training and enrichment program and paid internships for students of color to gain experience in medicine.
Beyond education, the organization is transforming healthcare through community-driven initiatives. The Diversifying Doulas Initiative® has provided lifesaving support to over 200 families since 2020, ensuring Black and Latine mothers receive culturally competent birth care. Their Mental Health Initiative connects Black and Latino residents to free, high-quality mental health services, addressing a critical need.
Patients R Waiting also strengthens the local community by publishing the SouthEast Times, a platform supporting local businesses and grassroots initiatives. Additionally, their Annual Diversity in Medicine Conference brings together future and current medical professionals to advance equity in healthcare.
